Singapore, 29 March – In response to Myanmar’s urgent request for humanitarian assistance following a devastating earthquake on 28 March, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has deployed its Operation Lionheart (OLH) contingent to assist in disaster rescue efforts.

The 80-member team, led by Colonel Tay Zhi Wei, departed from Changi Airport at approximately 1:20 PM today. The contingent comprises elite rescuers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART), Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS), full-time National Servicemen medical doctors, paramedics, search specialists with four canines, hazardous materials specialists, and support officers.

Before their departure, the team underwent a pre-mission briefing and preparations at SCDF headquarters early this morning. Equipped with an array of battery-operated Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) tools, including cutting, breaking, and lifting equipment, as well as life detection devices and fibre-optic scopes, the team is ready to be swiftly deployed for rescue operations in affected areas.
Additionally, three SCDF officers have been dispatched as part of the ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ERAT) under the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre). Their role is to conduct rapid assessments and determine critical resource needs for affected communities.
Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, met with the OLH team at SCDF headquarters before their departure, expressing his appreciation for their commitment and dedication. Family members and loved ones were also present to bid farewell to the team.
SCDF extended its gratitude to Singapore Airlines for facilitating flight arrangements on short notice and acknowledged the support from ST Logistics and SATS Ltd Singapore Hub Team in ensuring a smooth deployment.
The OLH contingent embarks on this mission with hopes of making a significant impact in Myanmar’s relief efforts, with SCDF wishing them a safe and successful operation.
