A traffic accident along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) escalated into a physical altercation between two drivers on January 31. The incident, which occurred near the Potong Pasir exit in the afternoon, was captured on video and shared on TikTok by user @m_tharan.
Accident and Confrontation
According to eyewitness accounts, a yellow Mitsubishi and a black Audi were involved in a collision. The drivers exited their vehicles and engaged in a heated argument, which quickly turned physical.
In the video, one man, dressed in a white T-shirt, is seen pointing aggressively at the other driver, who is wearing black. The confrontation escalated when the man in black threw a punch, knocking the first man’s phone to the ground. Both individuals continued to exchange gestures and words, with one repeatedly saying, “Lai” (come). The altercation then turned into a grappling match, culminating in the man in white throwing a punch.
Police Response and Arrest
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that the accident occurred along Jalan Toa Payoh towards Macpherson Road. A 48-year-old driver sustained minor injuries but declined medical assistance. Meanwhile, a 39-year-old driver was arrested for drink driving and later taken to the hospital.
The SPF stated that the arrested individual is also assisting with investigations for voluntarily causing hurt. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Legal Implications
Drink driving is a serious offense in Singapore, carrying severe penalties, including hefty fines, license suspension, and possible imprisonment. The incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving and highlights the potential consequences of road rage.
Authorities urge motorists to remain calm in the event of an accident and to follow proper legal procedures rather than resorting to physical confrontations. The SPF continues to investigate the matter and will take appropriate action against those found responsible.
