Desmond Lee and Jasmin Lau to meet ex-teacher who wrote open letter criticising MOE on teachers’ workloads

Wah this one blow up big time sia. Ex teacher Jo Ann Kuek post about teacher workload go viral, then straight away Education Minister Desmond Lee and MOS Jasmin Lau slide into her DMs to ask for a meet up. Meeting happening next week.

This whole saga start earlier this month when Desmond Lee say MOE data show teacher workload average 53 hours, stable, but complexity go up. Teachers hear already buay song, say class size problem talk so long still same.

Jo Ann then posted IG stories, call out why reducing class size like sacred cow cannot touch. She also collected comments from teachers, then wrote a full open letter. MOE took 15 days to reply, say they allocate resources based on needs, and still open to other options. But Jo Ann say letter like no cure, same old PR answer.

She left MOE back in 2010 after stress trigger thyroid problems. One month later still kena letter say she owe MOE $0.52. She say whole thing feel like slap. Her open letter say all the so called flexi measures not realistic because teachers basically never have empty days.

Main point she keep pushing, class size. Say MOE reluctant to fix, even though people talk about it since the 90s. She ask minister go do surprise school visits, see real ground issues, teachers juggling behaviour, admin, special needs, everything at once.

After her post went viral, teachers flood her inbox, say they scared to speak up, feedback always disappear into black hole, nothing changes. Her story even hit Reddit, kena thousands of upvotes.

On Nov 22 she say both Mr Lee and Ms Lau contacted her separately to speak further. Before meeting them, she compiling a brief from the flood of responses, include near term action ideas from teachers and ex teachers who no longer fear reprisal.

Wah, this one got potential to go somewhere, hope MOE actually listen and not just give another PR reply later.
