If you hear loud sirens across Singapore on the evening of Feb. 15, 2025, don’t panic—it’s part of an annual exercise.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will activate the “Important Message” signal through the Public Warning System (PWS) at 6:20 PM for one minute. This nationwide alert is part of Total Defence Day, observed annually to remind Singaporeans of the country’s resilience and preparedness.
Why Is the Siren Being Sounded?
The PWS is a critical system designed to warn the public in case of emergencies such as:
✔ Air, land, or sea attacks
✔ Natural disasters
✔ Other man-made threats
Beyond the sirens, smartphone users with the SGSecure mobile app installed will receive a 20-second alert along with a brief text notification. To receive this notification, ensure push notifications and alerts are enabled in the app settings.
Significance of Total Defence Day
February 15 marks the anniversary of Singapore’s surrender to Japanese forces in 1942. To honor this history and reinforce national preparedness, SCDF conducts this annual exercise to help residents recognize the PWS signals and respond appropriately.
SCDF also emphasized that the exercise serves as a reminder that “we need to stand resilient and do our part to protect Singapore and our future.”
What To Do When You Hear the Signal?
📻 Tune in to any local radio station or Mediacorp TV channel for an official message explaining the alert.
🌐 Missed it? Visit SCDF’s website for more details on PWS signals and emergency preparedness.
By staying informed and prepared, Singaporeans can contribute to the nation’s overall safety and resilience.
