Talk about a shell-shocking moment!
It might be the Year of the Snake, but on the first day of Chinese New Year, another reptile stole the spotlight—and it got one of Singapore’s bestselling authors to spring into action.
Neil Humphreys, the writer of Notes From An Even Smaller Island and more than 30 other books, was on an SBS Transit bus (Service 102) on Jan 29 when he witnessed what he called the “most surreal” incident at Buangkok Drive.

As the bus approached a stop, the driver suddenly had to swerve—because right there in the middle of the lane was a turtle, blissfully unaware that it was about to become roadkill.
“It was gonna be a direct hit!” Humphreys wrote in a post.
Without thinking twice, he jumped off the bus, dashed onto the road, and scooped up the little guy before carrying it to safety in Punggol Park.
The heroic rescue earned him a “thank you” from the driver and some thumbs-ups from fellow passengers.
Feeling like an action star, the London-born Singapore resident joked, “Indiana Jones got nothing on me.”
Online, people were loving the story. One commenter cheered him on, saying, “Great deed you have done! The turtle symbolizes longevity! You, the bus driver, and passengers will be blessed!”
Another person couldn’t resist a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles joke: “Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello called to say thanks for saving their Chinese cousin. Huat ah!”
A random act of kindness, a near-miss, and a bit of humor—what a way to start the Lunar New Year!
