13 Persons Arrested In Island-Wide Secret Societies Suppression Operation At Public Entertainment Outlets And Nightlife Establishments

Thirteen men suspected of being secret society members were arrested in an islandwide police operation on Nov 28 and 29.

The men, aged between 21 and 39, were nabbed on suspicion of being members of unlawful societies, police announced on Dec 3. The operation was led by the Secret Societies Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department, with support from five police divisions – Ang Mo Kio, Tanglin, Clementi, Jurong and Woodlands.

During the operation, officers checked about 40 public entertainment outlets, nightlife establishments and F&B outlets. They also conducted background checks on close to 100 individuals.

Investigations against the 13 arrested men are still ongoing. Under the Societies Act 1966, anyone found guilty of being a member of an unlawful society can face up to three years in jail, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. Quite heavy penalty sia!

The police warned that they will continue with regular enforcement operations throughout the year-end festive period. So all those involved in gang activities better watch out – the authorities are keeping a close eye on things.
